The Physics of Love.
June 29th, 2008 by csiewfongA nice shade of pink for this post.
I’m probably the worst person to consult ANYONE about love. Amor, ‘ai’, cinta… wateva u call it. But while I was doing physics 2 yrs ago, the similiarities between what we call ‘love’ and certain physics concept caught my attention. Thanks to Sir Isaac Newton, we not only have Newton’s Laws of Motion. I call it Physics Laws of Love (from Newton) as told by moi.
1. First Law states about the motion of an object, i.e if moving, will continue its motion and if at rest will continue to be stationary, unless an external force is subjected to it. Inertia.
Right. An example. A single person will stay single, until he/she meets another person (be it single or not). That, people, is the FORCE. Attraction. Vice versa, a pair of lovebirds will remain a couple unless external force e.g, the guy cheats (Brad Pitt and Jen); the girl flees for a richer, older guy (think Donald Trump); realisation (suddenly realise they r gay or that they don’t suit each other anymore); money problems, kids, marriage (love each other when they r single, once hitch…. u noe the story).
Same goes with another related theory, inertia, which is derived from Newton’s theory. A trolley slows down on a track due to friction. Same goes to the concept of love. Those problems mentioned are examples of ‘frictions’. Remember "the larger the mass, the bigger the inertia." Why do you think married men with many kids stay in a marriage ( i didn’t say faithful)? Why are women more reluctant to give in a divorce for the reason because of the kids sake? In this case, children, my friend, are the mass. They give u bigger inertia. U stay married, because u r reluctant to change. On the other hand, Casanovas r usually single men with pumping testesterones. They have NO strings attached, they change easily. From one woman to another. See? inertia.
2. Newton’s 2nd law of motion basically elaborates the formula F=ma. It’s a tricky one. But true.
Try linking this theory to mass and inertia above. You’ll understand. I have another explanation for a as in acceleration. Speed is dangerous. Move to fast, you die. Romeo and Juliet’s incredible love story actually took place in less than 3 days. They fell in love, got married, consummated their marriage, and die. All in 3 days. I studied that play, trust me, i know. The force covers 2 areas of love, bonding and separating. In R&J’s case, it separated them. Another example, some people get married to a person too soon, have sex too soon (more than 50% of women in a survey who reportedly had sex before 18 yrs old regretted it). U do it, find out he or she not for you. You split.
On the other hand, speed sometimes helps. Some ppl hav a really wonderful life from arranged marriage. Parents rush children into getting married, they have kids, live happily ever after. Those who wait, can’t hav kids. They cry. Remember the movie Juno? Juno and Michael Cera’s character fall in love AFTER she gave birth. Ironic right? That’s love, baby.
3. Newton’s 3rd law of motion. My personal favourite. Every action has an opposite and equal reaction.
Boy ask girl out, girl says yes (or no). Newton says u can’t touch anything without being touched. True, you can’t like someone without being liked, or repelled. We’ve all been through this. Or else why bother flirting? bcoz u noe, if u don’t do anything, he/she won’t even know you r alive. You hurt someone, they hurt you as in John Tucker Must Die. ’nuff said.
3. Opposites attract.
Someone once told me that this don’t apply unless you are a magnet. It does however apply. Forget looks, no, i’m not gonna talk about fat girl, skinny guy; beauty and the beast; chinese loves indian. Not THAT! Opposites in characteristics. A hot-tempered guy with a really really patient and understanding gal. Stuff like that. Beauty and the beast do apply here. The Beast has terrible attitude, while Belle is poised, have spirits and loving. Phantom of the Opera. Britney and K-Fed? She’s rich, he’s not. Opposites atrract!
4. Law of conservation of energy. Try to understand this.
Energy here is HOW MUCH you got in you. This i quote from a recent mag i read. That’s why a hot guy usually ends up with a hot girl. Look at the celebs. I don’t see too many fugly couples in the red carpet. Brangelina, beautiful eh? TomKat, Posh n Becks. Guys like Johnny Depp won’t settle for anyone less than Kate Moss *he dated her and is now with Vanessa Paradis (singer and Chanel model)* It’s the universal law. Just like why at one time royalties are not to marry norms. They just abide to this law. You have that much charm, that much ‘energy’… when an explosion happens, u get the same energy u conserve. Why settle for Norbit when you can have Giselle Bundchen right?
However, LOVE does not ALWAYS abide with the laws of the universe. That’s why it’s special. It’s not always predictable. Though some of them may have certain truths in it, it’s still amazing isn’t it? Like I know anything. Physics is boring and dry. I hate physics. Too many rules. There are no rules in love, only games.Have fun with the ride people, I’m still waiting for my turn in this roller-coster of life. :D
